Kinja'd!!!

In the full meaning of the question; I pop open the 911s engine for a quick look around and I find THIS on the roof of the engine bay:

Kinja'd!!!

I'm ashamed to say this has gone unnoticed for quite some time and I'm not sure how to go about cleaning it. It's some kind of deposit of something, oil or gas or a mix of something? it's flaky too... Also, how do I actually make the engine somewhat decent-looking again? The radiator fan for example.

Not sure what it is. A friend of mine thinks it may be grease.

Looks like grease buildup of some sort to me, also just pull the fan and clean it up.

Fantastic! Thank you. In your opinion, minus the fan, would you consider the engine to be clean-looking as is?

gotta find where the grease came from. grease is usually inside stuff that needs it...

Hmm, I wonder what part it came from. Time to do a quick forum search.

I haven't got a jack :(

I'll have to take it over to a mechanic to check her out.

got curbs? drive one side up onto a curb, should be enough room to shimmy around underneath, touching her dirty bits.

......I can't trust myself to do that without scuffing a wheel; but I think I can create a makeshift ramp to get her a couple inches in the air, or enough to get underneath with my head.

It doesn't look too bad I don't think.

Your engine bay looks pretty clean for a driver. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it kind of looks like open cell foam that was glued there to quiet vibrations, and it's just decaying. There really shouldn't be anything up there spraying grease or oil. all the grease and oil in those engines tends to be lower in the engine bay. it's all cooling fan and air intake up there, nothing that leaks oil or grease. Older vibration suppressing foam gets gummy as it decays.

Looks like deteriorating foam to me...

Yeah. It is that sound-deadening foam someone mentioned earlier. I looked at the engine again this morning and it all made sense to say the least. :P

Wonder if it's necessary to replace or not, because I'm gonna gently scrape that stuff out!

Rip it out and save a few ounces. Because racecar.
